Valparai tea estate workers hard-hit due to continuous rains that have affected tea production

Tea production has been very low in the past month, with only 20 kg of tea leaves being plucked now, on an average.

Coimbatore: Valparai is a renowned hotspot for tourists due to its serene landscape, largely owing to its large tea cultivated area of about 50,000 acres. There are more than 50,000 permanent and temporary workers working in these tea estates, who are required to pluck 42 kgs of tea leaves daily to sell and earn an extra Rs.4 per kg. This enables them to earn an average of upto Rs. 150 per day.

However, due to continuous heavy rains in Valparai during the last one month, the production of tea has been very low. At present, on an average, only 20 kg of tea leaves are being plucked. As a result, each worker loses an average of Rs. 5,000 per month. Similarly, there is a reduction in wages for workers in the tea industry too which has greatly inconvenienced tea estate workers who have already been hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
