SIMA Vice Chairman Sundararaman thanks PM Modi on announcement of PLI Scheme; Press Meet held in Coimbatore

Project priorities given for tier 3 and 4 towns.

Coimbatore : The Union Government has approved the PLI Scheme for MMF Apparel, Fabrics that would help upscale the textile industry for the next five years at the least. A budget of ₹.10683 crores has been outlaid for the scheme. The scheme will amplify manufacturing of manmade fabrics and increase job opportunities in the Textile Sector, thus reducing the need for import of textile products in the country. Following the announcement, a press meet was held at SIMA in Coimbatore. Dr. Sundararaman, Vice Chairman of Indian Technical Textile Association (ITTA) stated, "PLI is the landmark scheme for the MMF and technical textiles that would give a new lease of life for these segments.”

Thanking the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, the Minister of Textiles, Piyush Goyal, Minister of State for Textiles Darshana Vikram Jardosh and the Ministry of Textile for announcing the scheme, especially for the first time in India, Dr. Sundararaman said, “The scheme would accelerate creation of world-class champions in a short span of time in MMF and technical textile products global trade. The Scheme would also herald a new age in textile manufacturing, as the PLI for textiles along with RoSCTL, RoDTEP will offer unprecedented financial support to the sector. The Scheme offers two types of investment models, one with Rs.300 crores investment and another with Rs.100 crores with different rates of incentive for a period of five years and the Government is planning on attracting the third and fourth tier towns for investments, thus boosting employment opportunities and manufacturing locally."

"The technical textiles segment, being new-age-textiles having huge potentials in the infrastructure, water, health and hygiene, defense, security, automobiles, aviation, etc., the PLI Scheme, and the National Technical Textile Mission already launched by the Government with the budget outlay of Rs.1480 crores will give enormous opportunity for this segment. The pandemic has created a situation wherein self-reliance is the only key during tough challenges. The introduction of Atmanirbhar Bharat highly reduced the import of PPE and N95. The over- dependence on cotton and expensive man-made fibre price have been cited as the major reasons for the sluggish growth and India got pushed from 2nd to 6th position in the global textile trade. This led to the launch of Focus Product scheme apart from making MMF raw materials available at internationally Competitive rate. It also led the Government to take a bold step in abolishing the anti-dumping duties, and also reducing the import duties. The PLI scheme introduced now will thrust top valued global textile products like 42MMF garments, 14 MMF finished fabrics and 10 textile products. 13 identified sectors will boost their job opportunities, manufacturing and also increase textile exports. The scheme will especially benefit Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, UP, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh," he further added.
