Coimbatore : An ailing15-year old male elephant died at the Palamalai Forest area on Wednesday, despite efforts to save it.
It is migration season for elephants and these pachyderms usually move from Anaikatti, Periyanaickenpalayam, Mettupalayam and Bhavani Sagar to forests in Karnataka. The Periyanaickenpalayam Forest department received information that a male elephant was found stranded amidst the jungle in Tirumalur and was too feeble to walk. Forest officials rushed to the spot and even tried feeding the animal with medicines induced in fruits but the best of their efforts was to no avail.
The carcass of the elephant has been sent for post-mortem. Forest Officer, Selvaraj said, “On receiving information that a male elephant was ill, several attempts were made to treat it. Unfortunately, the elephant died while undergoing treatment. The cause of death will be ascertained once the post mortem reports are obtained.
