Inadequate rainfall has led to empty ponds, lakes and dams, which has led to lack of surplus water in Noyyal river.
Coimbatore: The Noyyal river in Coimbatore is the harbinger of water supply for Coimbatore, Tirupur and Karur areas. Inadequate rainfall has led to empty ponds, lakes and dams. The farmers who pay taxes annually for the Noyyal river irrigation understand the dire situation and thus fill the ponds with drainage water to provide water supply for animals.
However, since the river has been dry for years, ADMK ex-minister S M Velusamy decided to release sewage water into the dried-up river for treatment and reuse. He, along with the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran distributed the available water to increase the ground water level.
“The water cannot be extracted from Noyyal as there is no surplus water available. Moreover, there is also a Government channel irrigation in the area where surplus water is being asked to be released. The Noyyal is a source of drinking water from which extraction would cause huge distress. The Government will have to intervene and put a stop to those who exploit these water resources," opined S M Velusamy.
