Coimbatore Police Commissioner requests public to observe festival low-key; no procession, immersion of idols allowed.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore has requested the public and Hindu organizations in the city to celebrate the Vinayagar Chaturthi festival low-key.
He requested complete cooperation from the public and advised against processions and immersion of Idols in the water.
It is a tradition in India for people to celebrate Vinayagar Chaturthi for at least five days. The Lord Ganesha idols are usually placed in prominent spots all over the streets and many Hindu organizations engage large crowds in processions and immerse idols in nearby water bodies, as part of the tradition. However, with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government of Tamil Nadu has imposed a ban on the usual festivity across the cities to avoid a fresh outbreak of Covid-19 cases.
A continuous demand is being made on behalf of various Hindu organizations to lift the ban. In particular, a series of requests have been made to the Coimbatore District Collector and theCommissioner of Police in Coimbatore to keep the festivities this year too. In view of the many requests, the CCMC Commissioner, Deepak M Damor met with various Hindu organizations in the city to discuss the nuances of celebrating Vinayaka Chaturthi, this year.
Hindu Munnani, Bharat Sena and The Hindu People's Party and various other representatives were present in the meeting held on Monday. The Commissioner elaborated on the ban and guidelines issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu. He also insisted that the celebrations be held within house compounds and to avoid crowding, processions and immersion of idols.
Deputy Commissioners of the Crime Branch, Law and Order and various other top officials were present during the meet.
