Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police, S Selvanagarthinam has warned public to stay safe especially while playing in or near waterbodies.
'Despite warnings and accounts of innumerable drownings, people do not realize the threat of hazardous water falls and water bodies. Nearly hundreds of deaths are recorded every year among tourists who visit waterfalls, rivers, backwaters etc. In 2019, there were 100 deaths, in 2020 there were 94 and in 2021 there were 61. Public and tourists should avoid bathing in hazardous bathing spots and prohibited areas,' warned the SP.
He also directed the Coimbatore district police to carry out heavy patrolling in such dangerous areas to prevent drowning as well as create awareness among the public by putting up warning boards.
