TN to benefit from 12,000 million units of electricity for a year due to wind velocity

Heavy winds during the 'Aadi' season results in sufficient energy to generate electricity for the State

Coimbatore: The President of Wind Generators Association of India stated that Tamil Nadu is likely to benefit from 12,000 units of electricity in the year ahead owing to heavy winds brought in by the onset of 'Aadi' season.

Kasturirangayan, President of the Wind Power Producers Association of India (SNPA) said, “10,000 million units of electricity was generated from windmills, last year. A total of over 12,000 million units are estimated to have been generated by the season-end due to heavy winds in the Tamil month of Aadi, this year. Windmills usually majorly contribute to the total power demand in Tamil Nadu during the month of Aadi.

Windmills contributed one-third of the daily power demand in Tamil Nadu, last month. The Central and State Governments provide enough importance on non-conventional energy generation sector as power demand continues to rise across the country,” he added.

Windmills play an important role in meeting the rising need for electricity. There are 9,500 MW of power generation infrastructure across Tamil Nadu. Wind power generation season starts in late May every year till September. Wind power generation season started in the first week of April early this year. The month of Aadi is deemed crucial in wind power generation sector.

Wind power generators said power generation has also increased considerably due to high winds this year, which will result in a total power generation exceeding 12,000 million units by the end of the year.
