Intense surveillance at all check posts on the Coimbatore-Kerala border owing to Nipah virus breaking out in Kerala.
Coimbatore: The breakout of Nipah virus in Kerala has led to intense checking at all the check posts between Kerala and Coimbatore.
The Coimbatore District Collector inspected the Walayar check post in person on Monday. 13 check posts on the Kerala-Coimabtore border were under inspection today including Walayar, Velanthavalam and Meenakshipuram.
RT-PCR negative reports, complete vaccination certificates of both doses and body temperatures are checked for those who enter Coimbatore. The Principal Secretary of the Department of Health and Family Welfare in Tamil Nadu, Dr. J Radhakrishnan has directed the respective District Collectors to scrutinize measures and security protocols in the districts.
District Collector G S Sameeran briefed the media saying, "With the Nipah, Giga Virus and Covid cases being reported as rising, people from Kerala are checked for Covid test negative reports, complete vaccination certificates for two doses and body temperatures are checked for those who enter the city and the vehicle numbers are also noted down.”
Sameeran directed the checking officers to intensify inspection of vehicles and asked health workers to work on prevention of infection due to mosquitos. “83 kilolitres of liquid oxygen is available in Coimbatore district and additional restrictions have been put in place to prevent the spread. In the Zero PrevalenceStudy carried out in July, only 43 percent of the population in Coimbatore district was found to have resistance. With regular and studious vaccination camps conducted, the resistance has now increased to 55 percent. Those with less resistance are advised to be careful," reiterated the District Collector.
The city is expected to once again come under certain restrictions in the future with regard to purchase of alcohol. Three students in Coimbatore tested positive for Covid-19 and are under special care and treatment at ESI Hospital. A 12-year old is reported to have died in Kerala due to Nipah virus on Sunday.
