Nallasamy, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Agricultural Association stresses on removing the toddy ban and instead focuses on preventing adulteration. He alleged that the Tamil Nadu government's inability is showcased through the ban when toddy could not be proved as a drug
Coimbatore: Nallasamy, secretary of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Association, which has been fighting for the lifting of the ban on toddy for ten years, met reporters at the Coimbatore Press Club Yesterday.
Speaking at the time, he said the Tamil Nadu government had withdrawn the case filed against people who protested in violation against the three agricultural laws. He said similarly they call on the government to re-negotiate all the cases against the people who fought against the Constitution.
He said, "The Tamil Nadu movement has been waging various struggles for the last 17 years. A reward of Rs 10 crore was declared if proven by political parties or the government that toddy is a drug and it can be banned. If the government does not prove that toddy is a drug, we will again hold the Ashwamedha Yagam again in Chennai for the fourth time in January 2022. In states like Bihar and Kerala, alcohol was banned but not toddy. So why is toddy banned only in Tamil Nadu? If the ban is imposed because of the inability to prevent adulteration of toddy, then it must be said that the government has not been able to prevent adulteration. This act only shows that the government does not have the ability to control adulteration."
He added, "Periyar for a time supported toddy. As Periyar was a supporter, we asked Veeramani to support us and he refused. He said they kept Periyar’s photos and did not follow Periyar’s policies. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government should immediately lift the ban on toddy. Regarding local elections various amendments have to be made here. We have to make those amendments and hold this local election. Due to the failure to hold local elections under the previous regime, the subsidy was not given. Direct democracy in the local government should be introduced in this. In fact, the Supreme Court has said that the Tamil Nadu government has no intention of holding local elections. He said he had no faith in the Tamil Nadu Election Commission and therefore, the upcoming local elections should be held by the Election Commission of India."
