Following the TN Govt's announcement, Anganwadi Centres reopened in Coimbatore with about 35,000 children thronging the centres.
Coimbatore: Schools and colleges which had been closed for almost a year and a half due to the Coronavirus pandemic reopened on September 1, in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Government's order. Students were delighted to be back on campus.
The Government has also granted permissions for Anganwadi centres to function from Wednesday and resume classes. Students thronged the Anganwadi centres with great enthusiasm. The Anganwadi Centres in Coimbatore district have also been providing lunch to students since Wednesday.
Anganwadi Centres are functioning under the Integrated Child Development Program of the Department of Social Welfare. Children from 2-5 years of age study in these centres. There are 1,697 Anganwadi Centres in Coimbatore district. Basic education and sports are provided to the children at these centres. Also, awareness is created among parents on how to raise children in a healthy manner, with care given to the hygiene of the children.
Children from most families where both parents go to work are dependent on Anganwadi Centres. These Anganwadi Centers are very useful for such parents who know their children are cared for while they are at work and can then take their children home after work. About 1.5 lakh children are studying in Anganwadi centres.
During the pandemic period, since the children could not attend classes at the Anganwadi Centers for more than a year and a half, Anganwadi Centre staff went directly to the children's homes and provided them with rice, pulses and eggs needed to cook nutritious food at home to ensure the children stayed nourished.
Meenakshi, District Officer, Child Development Project said, 'The children were admitted to the Anganwadi Centers following an order from the Tamil Nadu Government. The kids were eager for the first day, yesterday. They were welcomed by the Anganwadi staff. They were given nutritious lunches. About 35,000 children came from all over the district,' she added.
