Provide land required for the expansion of Coimbatore Airport: Letter from the Minister of Civil Aviation to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
Coimbatore: The Central government has said that delays in land acquisition on behalf of the respective state governments and handing over to the Airports Authority of India are the main reasons for the delay in various development projects such as widening of runways at airports and upgrading of infrastructure to international standards.
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal Jyotiraditya.M.Cynthia wrote the letter.In it, he pointed out that in the above mentioned States and Union Territories, there is a long delay in acquiring lands on behalf of the State Government and handing them over to the Airports Authority of India.
The Central Civil Aviation Department has sent a letter to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Stalin, stating that various development projects, including the expansion of runways at airports and the improvement of infrastructure facilities in line with international standards, are being hampered.
It said 93.04 acres of land was required to set up additional lighting systems to help planes land at Chennai airport.Of this, only 5 acres have been handed over to the Airport Authority.
Similarly, 627.89 acres of land is required to increase the runway length at Coimbatore Airport and to upgrade various infrastructure facilities including the new terminal building for departure.
The letter also said that land had not been handed over to upgrade airports in cities including Madurai, Trichy and Tuticorin, and that land was needed to set up a new passenger airport at the airport complex currently operating on behalf of the Indian Air Force in Thanjavur.
Above all, the Government of Tamil Nadu owes Rs. 1.92 crore to the Regional Air Connectivity Fund Trust (VGF Share for Regional Air Connectivity Fund Trust RACFT).
Therefore, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation has requested that the land required for the development work at the above mentioned airports be expedited and handed over to the Airports Authority of India.
It is noteworthy that 10 years after the announcement of the airport expansion plan at Coimbatore International Airport, all development projects have been stalled due to non-acquisition of land by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The plan, which was announced during the DMK regime, has been revived 10 years later after the DMK-led government took over.
