4 men who were bathing in the Bhavani river had to be rescued by firemen due to sudden flooding of the river.

Coimbatore: Firefighters rescued four men from a sudden flood while they were bathing in the Bhavani river near Coimbatore.

Due to heavy rains in the Nilgiris district, the water level in the Pillur dam near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district has been on the rise. In addition, water was also being regularly released from the Pillur Dam for power generation. Since the water outflow has been consistent, Bhavani river began flooding. Four men bathing in the river suddenly realised they were caught in the flood and tried to climb a ridge in the middle of the river to prevent themselves from drowning.

Upon receiving information from those in the vicinity of the Bhavan river, the Mettupalayam fire brigade rushed to the river spot and rescued the four men who had been clinging on to the ridge to escape the flood. The four men were identified as Sundaramoorthy (35), Azhagar (32), Sakthivel (27) and Bhagwati (37) who hailed from Madurai and were staying at Mettupalayam, were construction workers who had stepped into the Bhavani river to bathe on Sunday, since it was a holiday.

Mettupalayam police are investigating the incident which caused a great stir in the area. Since people are oblivious to the sudden flooding that happens in the Bhavani river and people were in danger while bathing in the river, residents in Mettupalayam have requested the police to take appropriate action to prevent such incidents in the future.
