Chief Minister petitioned to build houses for Kallar Adivasi people in Theppakulam Medu, Valparai

Coimbatore: The adivasi people have submitted a petition to the Chief Minister's unit to build houses for the adivasi people in the Theppakulam Medu area, Valparai.

Valparai in Coimbatore district was inhabited by 11 tribal villages in the dense forest around it. Due to the heavy rains in the year 2018, natural calamities including landslides occurred in the tribal villages. Following this, the members of the 23 families who lived there were to live there due to the landslide caused by heavy rains, Valparai and submitted a petition to Tahsildhar about the state in the forest area.

They then informed the forest department. They set up a hut for them to be safe in the forest area as it was raining heavily again. They said National Tigers Commission should be informed to provide alternative location as per the Forest Act. The forest department removed the temporary hut set up by the Kallar tribal people. Then with the help of the district and the administration headed by the District Collector, it was informed that the the people of Kallar settlement that they would select a place in the Theppakulammedu area, measure the area and send it to the National Tiger Reserve Commission for an answer.

As people reported that there was a lot of landslides in the hilly area of Kallar and they could not live there, with the cooperation of the district administration, the authorities talked to the management of the Thaimudi Estate and temporarily housed the tribal people in the vacant tea plantation workers' flats. The District Collector and Pollachi Sub-Collector surveyed the land and sent its details to the National Tiger Commission. But so far no solution has been reached.

Tribal villagers have sent a petition to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The petition stated that they have been living in the midst of various difficulties in the estate residential area away from their land for the last 3 years and are suffering from not being able to follow their culture. They added that women and girls from their families are being affected. Eating habits are also changing and thus their children are becoming vulnerable to coronavirus diseases that is contagious. Therefore, it has been stated that the Chief Minister should order the Forest Department to take immediate action to restore the traditional settlement in the Theppakulam Medu area by obtaining the order of the National Tiger Commission.
