Humane Animal Society celebrates International Dogs Day: SP S.Selvan Nagarathinam visits shelter and interacts with staff, shelter dogs & volunteers

Coimbatore: Humane Animal Society (HAS), a non-profit trust for animal welfare, celebrated International Dogs Day yesterday at the ABC and Rescue Centre in Seeranaickenpalayam.

On this occasion, S.Selvan Nagarathinam, IPS - Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore visited the shelter and interacted with the shelter dogs, volunteers and the employees of HAS. He appreciated the commitment shown by the city’s young volunteers who are helping voiceless animals. S.P also emphasized on spreading more awareness among public and school children about caring for animals. He urged volunteers to come forward to report complaints against animal cruelty or abuse.

Dr. Mini Vasudevan, Founder of Humane Animal Society (HAS) shared, “Since our inception in 2006, the people of Coimbatore have been very helpful and supportive towards street animals. Our volunteers have been contributing their time and skills, and have donated generously for the welfare of the street and rescued animals. We are happy that the Superintendent of Police is an animal lover, and we are thankful for his continued support and assurance towards animal welfare.”

Over 25 volunteers joined in to celebrate International Dog Day. They spent time walking the dogs and playing with them. The significance of this day is to celebrate all dogs, irrespective of their breed, shape, size, etc. It is also to encourage people to adopt dogs.

Humane Animal Society (HAS) was established in April 2006 as a non-profit trust under the Indian Trust Act to address the welfare of stray animals in the city of Coimbatore. HAS has impacted 65,000 animals in the district of Coimbatore. The organization has been focusing on animal birth control and anti-rabies drives, and rescuing animals that are in urgent need of treatment. The rescued animals are treated and rehabilitated at our ABC and Rescue Centre before being released back to their community. The HAS Sanctuary becomes the new home of the ones for whom release wouldn't be safe. HAS also actively facilitates adoptions of puppies, dogs and kittens and helps them find forever homes and families for them.
