Residents in Pollachi petition Pollachi Sub-Collector to expedite underground sewerage project due to risk of various diseases that could spread owing to overflow of sewage onto roads near Kurinji Nagar.
Coimbatore: Pollachi Municipality had begun an underground sewerage project worth Rs. 200 crores, four years ago. Thework that had begun was moving at a slow pace but was accelerated during elections. Post-election, the work had been put on hold. Of the 36 wards in Pollachi Municipality, only 50 percent has been completed thus far. Accidents are on the rise as pits dug in many places have not been closed.
In some areas, pipes connecting to houses are left midway resulting in waste overflowing onto the roads. In Pollachi's Kumaran Nagar area, motorists and general public are reportedly suffering due to the stagnant sewage overflowing out of the pipes, under the railway bridge leading to Kurinji Nagar. The area, which is home to about 500 families who are reportedly already under the risk of Coronavirus infection, are now fearing that they could be vulnerable to the spread of diseases like dengue and malaria which could mostly affect women, the elderly and children. Hence, the residents have petitioned the Pollachi Sub-Collector, Thakare Shubham Dnyandeorao due to inaction by municipal authorities. They demanded that immediate action be taken to save residents from the spread of various diseases and to complete the sewerage project work quickly in order to avoid inconvenience for motorists.
