Coimbatore: Work for construction of 645 check dams across streams, rivers and canals in Coimbatore district at a cost of Rs 68 crore has been intensified.
In rural areas, check dams are being built across streams and rivers, to store rainwater and raise groundwater levels. Coimbatore district has 12 panchayat unions namely Karamadai, Madukkarai, Periyanickenpalayam, Thondamuthur, Kinathukadavu, Pollachi North, Pollachi South, Anaimalai, SS Kulam, Annur, Sulur and Sultanpet.
There are 228 panchayats under these panchayat unions. The District Rural Development Department is involved in the development of basic infrastructure in these panchayats. Various welfare schemes including Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, construction of toilets, construction of check dams, green houses are being carried out under this department. Of this, 645 dams are being constructed in rural areas at a cost of Rs. 68 crore during the last financial year 2020-21.
A district administration official said that it has been decided to build 645 check dams across streams, rivers and canals in the district in the financial year 2020-21. Of this, 310 dams have been built and are in use so far. Of these, 20 dams have been constructed at Karamadai, 5 at Madukkarai, 13 at Periyanaickenpalayam, 11 at Thondamuthur, 39 at Kinathukadavu, 81 at Pollachi North, 36 at Pollachi South, 51 at Anaimalai, 20 at SS Kulam, 20 at Annur and 30 at Sultanpet. The remaining dams are being built. He said these dams allow the area to store water for agriculture.
