Coimbatore: The Periyanaickenpalayam area near Coimbatore is prone to accidents on a daily basis due to being on the highway and also unsafe and damaged roads.
Public demanded that the highway authorities take immediate action to rectify it that was causing suffering to motorists
Rs 85 crore worth flyover construction
On the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road from Periyanaickenpalayam, Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya to Samichettipalayam pirivu, a 1.4 km long flyover is being constructed at a cost of about Rs. 85 crore. To this end, the roadside encroachments from thePeriyanaickenpalayam to the Samichettipalayam Pirivu have been cleared of trees and the construction of the flyover is in full swing.
Also giant pits have been dug to erect pillars at the LMW Division PN Palayam Bus Stand and Samichettipalayam Pirivu.The work of erecting pillars from the LMW Divisiom area to Samichettipalayam is in full swing. The whole area is dusty and motorists have to drive very carefully.
Giant pits not secured properly
"Giant pits are being dug up in some places and pillars are being erected. These pits are neglected and proper security arrangements have not been made. Such carelessness can lead to a major accident" said people in the area.
Continuing casualties
According to the people of the area, the work on the Periyanaickenpalayam continues in full swing. They said, "Giant pits were dug, but the barriers were not set up properly. There is a risk of vehicles falling into giant pits and causing an accident. Also, the service road is not paved so there is dust everywhere. Even yesterday there was an accident in this area. One died on the spot. Service roads are not paved so it is like riding vehicles on the moon."
An official of the National Highways Department said, "The flyover work is being carried out with adequate security.
Drinking water pipes go in many places where the pillar is set. Therefore, they are undamaged and work is being carried out. Steps will be taken to complete the above tasks expeditiously. Construction of service roads has also started."
