Govt.'s child labour eradication program is being implemented with the aim of preventing children from being sent to work due to family poverty.
Coimbatore: The Coimbatore district administration has been actively monitoring and taking various measures to study and eradicate child labour in Coimbatore. Officials announced that serious action is being taken to monitor if any of the children in the city are forced to go to work because of family hardships owing to Coronavirus lockdown that has cost people their livelihoods.
The Government's child labour eradication program is being implemented with the aim of preventing children from being sent to work due to family poverty. Steps are being taken to enroll recovered child labourers in schools and to impose fines on those who employed them. In Coimbatore district, 5 boys in 2016-17, 13 boys in 2017-18, 8 boys in 2018-19, 14 boys in 2019-20 and 5 boys in 2020-21 have been rescued from establishments they were employed in.
District Planning Officer, Vijayakumar said, 'Awareness is growing that children should not be employed. In registered companies, it is rare that they employ children. To recover children who are employed in establishments, we continue to conduct raids. Due to the Coronavirus lockdown, children are more likely forced to go to work. To prevent that, surveillance has been intensified,' he reiterated.
