Marxist Communist Party protests in Tirupur against increase in gas cylinder prices; Urge Central Govt. to revoke price hike immediately
Coimbatore: The Central Government's decision to once again hike the price of a cooking gas cylinder being used for domestic purposes by Rs 25, has shocked the public. The recent hike has resulted in a total of Rs. 165 price hike in the last eight months.
In December last year, the price of a domestic cylinder was increased by Rs. 50 to Rs. 660 from Rs. 610 per cylinder. Since then, gas cylinder prices have continued to rise since February this year. They were hiked by Rs. 25 on February 4 and Rs. 50 on February 15. On February 25, it was again raised by Rs.25. Again on March 1, it was hiked by Rs. 25. At present, the Government has once again increased by Rs. 25. Thus, the cooking gas cylinder which was priced at Rs. 850.50 last month is now Rs. 875.50. In the last 8 months alone, the cylinder price has increased by Rs. 165.
As a result, protests are being staged in various parts of Tamil Nadu condemning the hike in the price of gas cylinder. As part of this, the Marxist Communist Party in Tirupur district staged a protest in Velliangadu area of Tirupur condemning the increase in cylinder prices. The protesters chanted slogans urging the Government to immediately reduce the price of cylinders since the hike has affected the poor who are already reeling from having lost their livelihood due to the Coronavirus lockdown.
