During the first and the second waves of the Covid-19 pandemic in Coimbatore, life-saving medical equipments, oxygen cylinders, ventilators, O2 concentrators were flown to the city through various airlines. With increasing death rates, and awareness on vaccination, the demand for vaccines increased multi-fold, while dearth in vaccine supply left public to run pillar to post to get their doses.

However, to meet the rising demand and vaccinate more people swiftly, transportation of vaccines through flights were seen as a viable option.
According to airport sources, a large chunk of vaccines both Covishield and Covaxin have been transported through Indigo airlines to Coimbatore, thus benefitting around seven districts around Coimbatore. "Chennai, Hyderabad and Mumbai being the major hub to source vaccines, almost 2 tons of Covishield and Covaxin were fetched from those places through air to Coimbatore through Indigo airlines . We expect several such consignments of vaccines to be transported to Coimbatore through air service, in the near future,” stated sources from airport.
