Tirupur: Farmers lay siege to the Public Works Department office complaining of abuse in the Parambikulam Aliyar project.

The Parambikulam Aliyar (PAP) Irrigation Project is one of the largest irrigation projects in Tamil Nadu and many farmers protested against various irregularities caused by the public works officials in relation to the project.

The protesting farmers put up photos of Gandhi and Kamaraj and registered their protest. Farmers have accused the mills operating on the banks of the irrigation canal of stealing large quantities of water for the needs of poultry farms. They alleged that in spite of complaints, the PWD officials did not take any action on the complaints.

Farmers also alleged that public works officials were involved in various irregularities in water management. As a result, farmers were facing water shortages and severe hardships. The farmers, therefore demanded that the Government ought to remove the shortcomings in the Parambikulam-Aliyar irrigation project for the benefit of the farmers. The protesting farmers warned that if water was stolen in favor of corporations, they would intensify the protest.
