The 75th Independence Day was celebrated at the tribal village in Valparai, with a 90-year old former elder hoisting the flag.

Coimbatore: The 75th Independence Day was celebrated on Sunday, August 15, in Valparai which comprises more than 10 tribal villages.

The Villoni Estate near Valparai is a forest settlement area with a population of about 160 people.

Ganesan, a 90-year old former elder hoisted the flag to commemorate the 75th Independence Day. Ganesan lives in the Nedukunram settlement area and was honoured to be part of the 75th Independence Day celebrations. "It is a pleasure to celebrate Independence Day in the area where my paternal grandparents lived.

Nedunkunram settlement was located on the pathway where Englishmen went to Pollachi by horse-drawn carriages through the jungle. We, as children then, would be scared and hide when we saw the Englishmen pass by. We are happy to be free now. We have been living in this forest for four to five generations. In this generation we are seeing people graduating and everyone at least has basic education," opined an emotional Ganesan.

The 75th Independence Day was celebrated in the forest areas with sweets distributed to all. Moopan Ratna Sami Ravi, former Moopan Ganesan, Prakash Sakthivel, Subramanian and many other tribals were present on the occasion.
