Public protest opposing privatisation of land inhabited for more than 40 years in Tirupur

The public staged a sit-in protest against the Revenue Department, which had come to measure the privatization of a residence in Tirupur for more than 40 years.

Coimbatore: In Tirupur, the public staged a sit-in protest against the Revenue Department, which came to measure the lands for privatization that has been inhabited for more than 40 years. More than 100 families have been living in the Rayapuram Anaimedu area under Tirupur Corporation for the last 40 years. In 2010, the Tirupur Divisional Revenue Officer allowed the public to stay there for a long time. Later verdict was in favor of Muthusamy in 2019 after Muthusamy had filed a case in the court saying that it was privately owned.

The revenue department was asked to measure the land and hand it over to Muthusamy. Later Muthusamy sought the court again as the measurement work has been stalled for the past two years. Again an order was issued that the revenue department should immediately survey the land and hand it over to Muthusamy. Following this, the public engaged in a road roko, besieging the revenue department who went to measure the land.

Upon information. the Tirupur South MLA, who came to the spot, said that the verdict had come in favor of Muthusamy as the 2019 Tirupur Divisional Revenue Officer had not filed in the court the assurance given to the public that the land survey work should not be carried out at present and that the public should be provided security to live there. He then participated in the protest of the people and expressed his support for them. As a result, land surveying was suspended.
