Attorney Tholkappian petitions Coimbatore District Collector G S Sameeran with Google Map image, urging action against illegal stone quarrying with excessive depth
Coimbatore: River sand is being dumped in areas around Coimbatore without permission and sand is being excavated in excess of the permitted levels. Also more than 300 licensed quarries around Coimbatore are blasting the quarry and excavating gravel and M Sand.
Tholkappian, a well-known lawyer has filed a petition with the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran alleging that the stone quarries had used powerful explosives to smash too many rocks beyond the Government's permit. He sent the petition by registered mail with an attachment of a Google Map image of people quarrying illegally. In the petition, the lawyer demanded immediate investigation and further action.
Attorney Tholkappian has also lodged a complaint with the Coimbatore district administration alleging that natural resources are being exploited illegally at the quarry near Karamadai in Coimbatore. He alleged that rough stone boulders, smaller stones, M.sand, P.sand and dust are being excavated without permission.
According to the complaint, explosives were made using highly explosive chemicals that could go deeper than the permissible depths of about 4 km to enable excavation of stones and soil from the quarry for sale. The petition stated that such powerful explosives cause the stones to fall on houses in nearby villages, and the possibility of hearing loss due to the excessive noise that could affect people as well as cause disturbance to students.
The petition also urged the District Collector to set up a Committee to bring out the truth about Blue Metal company which was quarrying illegally. At the same time, the lawyer released a Google photo of the exploited natural resources which clearly shows a Google Map clearly illustrating the extent to which state-owned mineral resources are being exploited. It was also requested in the petition that the district administration should immediately set up a Special Committee to investigate quarry owners involved in the scam and suspend their quarry license.
Accepting what was stated in the petition, District Collector G S Sameeran assured that whoever was at fault and exploiting the mineral resources of the district would be duly prosecuted.
