Coimbatore: According to a Social Welfare Department official, 78 child marriages have been halted in Coimbatore District since January on the basis of a complaint received by the Child Protection Unit.
Not only is child marriage prohibited but the children who are rescued are constantly monitored by the Department of Social Welfare until they are of marriageable age. Rescued children are advised to visit the Union, Municipality and Corporation offices in person, once a week to sign.
53 children were rescued from being married off last year, and this year 78 child marriages have been halted, with four child marriages halted in August. The number of child marriages being halted in Coimbatore has been increasing every year.
