Old government school building demolished at midnight: Public siege for carrying out works without prior notice

Coimbatore: In D. Nalligavundanpalayam near Pollachi, a new government school building has been constructed and has been functioning for the last few years as the existing Government Intermediate School building was in a dilapidated condition.

For the past two days there have been complaints that some people have been breaking into the old school building at midnight, taking away valuable timber and stones.

When officials demolished the walls of the school building with JCB machines and tractors at midnight yesterday, the people of the area besieged the staff and got into an argument. Pollachi taluk police and revenue officials rushed to the spot, seized the vehicles used to demolish the school building at midnight and are investigating.

No warning was given to the public regarding the demolition of the old school building and some of the items were taken away after the demolition of the old school building at midnight without proper permission. The people of the area have demanded that the Revenue and Police authorities conduct an investigation and take stern action against those involved.
