Woman attempts suicide at the Coimbatore Collector's Office demanding reopening of Koniyamman temple.
Coimbatore: Every Monday, the Collectorate in Coimbatore is bustling with people from different parts of the district to petition the Collector.
On Monday morning, a woman tried to drink cow dung powder in a suicide bid demanding for the reopening of the Koniyamman temple.
The incident occurred at the entrance of the District Collectorate when the Coimbatore Collector, G S Sameeran had received petitions from the public and directed the respective departmental authorities to take action.

During that time, both male and female police personnel who were on duty at the gate of the District Collector's office to ensure petitoners were orderly in filing their petitions noticed a woman who was trying to consume cow dung powder from a bottle she had hidden.
Immediately, the police detained her and when questioned the woman reportedly explained that it was customary for women to fast during Amavasai, Aadi Friday and the month of Aadi to worship the goddess. She lamented that due to the curfew, all the Amman temples have been closed and hence devotees are forced to stand outside the temple to worship the goddess. The woman demanded that all temples be opened immediately.

The police rescued the woman who was identified as Muthulakshmi from Mahaliamman Street in the Poo Market area. The police took her to the police station for interrogation and a female police officer explained to the woman about the prevalent danger of rising Covid-19 infections and the need for curfews for the safety of the public.
