Highways Dept. beefs up flyover construction work in Coimbatore due to decreased vehicle movement owing to lockdown

Coimbatore: Social activists and locals in Coimbatore district are raising a hue and cry over illegal liquor being sold in the city during lockdown.

Coimbatore: Traffic on Coimbatore roads have drastically reduced due to implementation of a complete curfew. This has been a boon for construction work of the flyover which is presently underway in full swing.

In Coimbatore, flyovers are being constructed at key locations to ease traffic congestion. In particular, flyovers on major roads such as Coimbatore-Trichy Road, Ukkadam-Athuppalam Road, Coimbatore-Mettupalayam Road and Avinashi Road are being constructed quicker since vehicle movement is at a standstill.

An official of the Highways Department said, "Although a complete curfew has been imposed in Tamil Nadu, no construction work has been banned. Thus, overhaul work is underway. A flyover is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 253 crores for a distance of 3.1 km on the Coimbatore-Trichy road. The work is 90 percent complete. Work on the landing site from the flyover in the customs area is currently being expedited. Wire construction work is also underway.

Similarly, flyover work is in progress at Kavundampalayam on the Coimbatore-Mettupalayam road. We are taking steps to complete these two overhauls by the end of this year. In addition, flyovers are also being constructed at Athuppalam and Avinashi Road. In some places, machines are used to complete the work without any hindrance, unlike before when we had to be mindful of traffic during the day," added the official.
