100 kg of medical waste is collected daily from isolated houses in Coimbatore - Corporation official

Coimbatore: Medical waste is being collected in separate vehicles from those who are isolated in their homes in Coimbatore, a corporation official said.

The number of corona infections in Coimbatore district is around 3000 daily. Permission is granted on behalf of the District Health Department and the Corporation to isolate those who come in for treatment with mild infection symptoms, those who are not forced to stay in hospitals to seek treatment, and to carry out appropriate medical care from home.

As of yesterday alone, up to 11,000 people have been allowed to be isolated in their homes in the Coimbatore district.

In this situation, the corporation officials have taken steps to collect medical waste including masks and gloves used by those who are thus isolated in their homes in the corporation areas through separate vehicles.

An official of the corporation said, “At the rate of one vehicle per zone on behalf of the corporation, separate vehicles are operated to collect medical waste from those affected by the corona and isolated in their homes in 5 zones. 15 to 20 kg of medical waste is collected daily in each zone. The waste, which is collected in separate vehicles, is placed in the possession of the waste management unit.

Similarly, garbage collected in the homes of isolated persons is collected separately. The bag is taken to the Vellaloor Garbage Depot, sprayed with disinfectant and disposed of”
