All India People's Rights and Legal Awareness Association petitions CMCH Dean to avoid issuing MLC to Covid-19 patients who died outside the hospital due to lack of beds with oxygen facility.

Coimbatore: Patients arriving at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) to be treated for Covid-19 infections sometimes end up waiting outside the hospital since beds with oxygen facility are unavailable. Many people have reportedly died in ambulances due to the delay. Such deaths are registered as 'Brought Dead' and filed as an MLC case. Arrangements for cremating loved ones can be made only after the kin of the patients lodge a complaint at the police station, obtain evidence and then hand it over to the ARMO.

This has caused inconvenience to the relatives of the deceased at a time of mourning, especially if they have brought their loved ones for treatment from other districts. They are unable to go back to their hometown due to the lockdown to obtain a certificate from their hometown's police station. Thus, some of the kin have been waiting for days to cremate the corpses. All India People's Rights and Legal Awareness Association has urged CMCH to refrain from insisting on such formalities. "Death due to Covid-19 is not an unnatural death, but natural. As per CRPC only unnatural deaths are to be investigated by police, not natural death. We request the hospital to avoid such practices so as to help the mourning kin of the deceased. We request the CMCH Dean to cancel the MLC case registration system which is causing too much inconvenience to distraught relatives of the deceased," they added.
