Since April, the number of dead due to Covid-19 in the district has become a grave concern for crematoria staff who are having to be on their toes all the time with ambulances arriving with far too many corpses requiring final rites to be performed.
Staff at Athupalam crematorium say that they are witnessing the worst scenarios in the past few weeks even as the count of corpses rose to 5 from 2-3 each day. Along with a deep pall of gloom, fear has set in among residents living near the crematoria since the area seems to be engulfed with black smoke most of the time.
Public fear that the chances of caregivers becoming community carriers are higher since they huddle along with other patients' caregivers thus creating an environment for the virus to spread faster. “The Tamil Nadu Government must enforce strict lockdown for the next two months to control the spread of the second wave of Covid-19 and to protect the lives of people," pleaded distraught caregivers of Covid-19 victims at the crematoria.
