36 prisoners who were released on bail due to Covid-19 spread in prisons have gone into hiding; Court issues warrant for their arrest
Coimbatore: Thirty-six inmates released from Coimbatore jail on bail due to rising Covid-19 spread have reportedly gone into hiding.
About 1,700 inmates are held at the Coimbatore Central Jail. Some individuals arrested in various criminal cases are not directly confined to the Coimbatore Central Jail due to the risk of Covid-19 ispread. Instead, they are lodged in various jails in Coimbatore district, monitored for any illness and then brought to Coimbatore Central Jail after being isolated for 16 days.
Some of the Coimbatore Central Jail inmates have applied for bail due to the spread of the virus. In the last two years, 40 prisoners who were granted bail during the Covid-19 period have gone missing. While four of the inmates have returned to jail, the remaining 36 accused who are on bail have reportedly gone into hiding.
With the second wave of Covid-19 reaching its peak, over a hundred inmates have applied to the prison administration for bail. The authoroties have refused permission, and a warrant has also been issued by the Court to imprison the 36 missing inmates who are in hiding and to remand them to custody. The police have launched a man-hunt to nab the missing inmates.
