'No Food Waste' sets up Central Kitchens across cities to scale up food recovery efforts to serve the needy amidst 'Covid-19' crisis
Coimbatore: 'No Food Waste,' a Coimbatore-based non-profit organization which collects excess food and serves the needy has implemented various initiatives to help people fight against the 'Covid-19' second wave. No Food Waste stated in a press release that they had created dedicated Central Kitchens at various spots across the cities for preparing food for the needy.
"We have engaged Self Help Groups for preparing food and social-conscious volunteers to support food distribution with best hygiene practices. During Phase 1 national lockdowns and state lockdowns, we have served about 4.4 million meals to migrant labourers, slum dwellers and various communities in India. During the second Covid-19 wave, we are focusing more on food requirements for migrants, homeless, people who have moved from other cities for Covid-19 treatment in Government hospitals and daily wage workers who lost their jobs during lockdown. Currently, we are identifying more needy areas and serving about 1,200 meals every day in Coimbatore city. We are doing a survey and from the coming week we are looking to support more people in need. Similarly, in cities like Chennai and Hyderabad, we are providing over 3,000 plates of food support to hospitals and daily wage workers as well as migrant workers. Also, patients who don’t have care takers and are alone, are provided with nutritious meals by our volunteers. Biscuits, breads and other packed food items are provided to hospitals. 'No Food Waste' also supports low income and daily wage families who are suffering from lack of food and other basic resources to meet their daily needs due to lockdown. "So, with the support of retail networks, we are packing and distributing “Family Resource Kits” which includes basic amenities such as rice, dhal, wheat, flour, pulses, spices and other basic food resources which is sufficient for 20 days for a family of four members. The 'Ration Kit' consists of 10 kg rice, 5 kg wheat, 1 litre oil, 1 kg of Sugar & Salt , 250 grams of masala powders - 2 packets, 2 kg dhal – with each kit priced at Rs. 1000. "Hygiene Kits" comprise Handwash - 100 ml, Soaps - 4, Towel, Phenol - 2 litres, Masks - 4, Sanitary Pads - 1 packet, Detergent - 1 kg priced at Rs. 500 per kit. This is being supported by Reliance Foundation, Zomato, SEEDS, GFN, Siemens Games and a few others."
