Even as water was released on Sunday from the Azhiyar Dam, about 1205 million cubic feet of water is expected to be supplied for 153 days from May 16 to October 15. The Parambikulam-Azhiyar Dam is one of the important dams of the Azhiyar project and irrigates 6400 acres according to the old strategy and 44000 acres as per the new strategy.
The release of water from the Azhiyar Dam was ordered by the Tamil Nadu Government following the demands of the farming community that water be released for the old strategic irrigation.
Engineer Narendran, Assistant Engineer Leela and Azhiyar Dam Assistant Engineer Manikkavel were present as water was released from the Azhiyar Dam for irrigation.
