Water level in Siruvani Dam rises to 15.48 ft. due to heavy rains
Coimbatore: The water level in Siruvani Dam has risen to 15.48 ft. due to heavy rains in the area.
Siruvani Dam is located in Palakkad, Kerala and is considered to be the main source of water for people in Coimbatore. The Siruvani Dam supplies drinking water to 36 wards and innumerable roadside villages in Coimbatore. The Siruvani Dam can hold 22.47 sq. km of water and is 49.53 ft. high and 878.5 meters above sea level.
Even though the Siruvani Dam can hold water capacity of 650 million cubic ft., the water level of the dam has been declining due to lack of rain in the catchment areas of the dam since the onset of the monsoon, last March. The water level of the dam had fallen below 15 ft. but is now rising due to heavy rains in the catchment areas of the dam, for the past few days.
Corporation officials state that 75.33 MLT of water is being drawn from Siruvani by the Corporation for drinking water supply and hence drinking water shortage is unlikely. The water level of the dam is now 15.48 ft. which had previously dropped below 15 ft.
