Around 4 lakh people in the Nilgiris district have been vaccinated against Covid-19 - Minister K Ramachandran

A new unit is to be set-up in the forest department to prevent human deaths due to elephant attacks in Tamil Nadu.

The Nilgiris: TamilNadu Minister of Forests K Ramachandran said that the Government of Tamil Nadu has given permission to set up oxygen production centers in the Nilgiris, Perumbalur and Virudhunagar districts to alleviate the oxygen shortage in the state due to the increasing incidence of Covid-19 infection.

Tamil Nadu Forest Minister K Ramachandran met with the reporters in Ooty and said that a new unit is to be set-up in the forest department to prevent human deaths due to elephant attacks in Tamil Nadu and to monitor wild elephants entering residential areas and drive them into dense forest areas.

A consultative meeting on Covid-19 prevention measures was held in Ooty, Nilgiris district. Coonoor MLA and Forest Minister K Ramachandran attended the meeting and inquired from all departmental officials about the Covid-19 control work being carried out across the Nilgiris district.

During the meeting, Minister K Ramachandran handed over 25 lakh worth of oxygen supplements to the health department in the Nilgiris District which was donated on behalf of the TVS Foundation.

Following this, Minister K Ramachandran told the media that adequate arrangements have been made to provide Covid-19 treatment in the Nilgiris district and said that the oxygen reserve is high and additional beds are available in the treatment centers across the Nilgiris.

He then said that around 4 lakh people in the Nilgiris district have been vaccinated against Covid-19 so far and said that the death rate is low.

When asked by reporters about the steps taken by the Tamil Nadu government to prevent more elephant deaths in Tamil Nadu, he said: " The fight between humans and wildlife cannot be solved immediately as the human population and tea estates are located occupying forest areas. Hence a new unit is to be set-up soon along with the forest department to drive the elephants back into the forests and will monitor the entry of elephants into residential areas."
