Coimbatore: There are about 56 estates in Valparai, Coimbatore district and more than 50,000 tea plantation workers are employed.
The Tamil Nadu government has declared a complete lockdown from the 10th to the 24thas the second impact of the coronavirus is spreading in Tamil Nadu. Tea plantation workers have been working from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., taking lunch breaks from 12 noon to 1 p.m., and returning to work from 1 to 5 p.m. They are at risk of spreading the coronavirus as estate administrations fail to provide them with adequate coronavirus prevention equipment such as face masks, gloves. So it was insisted that tea plantation workers work from 8am to 2pmand to give them paid leave.
Communist Party of India election committee member Arumugam and Viduthalai Siruthaigal trade union leader Keshavan Murugan along with DMK union leader Vinod submitted a petition to the Coimbatore District Collector to provide tea estate management workers with the necessary equipment to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
