Issuing of tokens for procuring Remdesivir in Coimbatore Medical College closed, To be made available from next week

Coimbatore: As soon as the sale of Remdesivir, an injectable anti-viral drug used for Covid-19 patients began at the designated centres, protest, long queues, disagreements, disappointments and frustration marked the mood for public at all the centres. Coimbatore Medical College was no exception. The drug provided by the Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation accounts to 560 vials for Coimbatore district, while the districts including Salem, Trichy, Madurai , Tirunelveli and Chennai received 300, 393, 500 and 1,500 vials respectively.

Coimbatore Medical College received 500 vials but as soon as the sale began, the campus witnessed heated arguments, disappointment and frustration among the public who had gathered to buy the drug, but were told that the drug had been sold out. Many of them waiting in long queues awaiting their turn were from neighbouring districts including Erode, Tirupur and Mettupalayam. On Sunday, sources say, only 63 tokens were remaining which were also issued to the caregivers of Covid-19 patients.

However, people thronged the CMCH campus on Monday and Tuesday to buy the drug but were sent back home, since the hospital management had put up a board saying tokens are available only from May 17.

Many people from Perur and the outskirts of the city have been waiting on the platform at the campus right through the day and night and got into arguments with the officials. Their efforts in trying their best to get the tokens were in vain and they walked away empty-handed, since there were no tokens available at Coimbatore Medical College, until next Monday.
