Coimbatore: Air Traffic at the Coimbatore International Airport has been severely affected due to the second wave of Covid-19 which has been sweeping across the district. Only 6 flights are said to be operational on a daily basis.
Coimbatore International Airport serves the people of 7 districts in and around Coimbatore. More than 30 flights were operational daily before the spread of Covid-19 with only 5 flights operational daily during May last year owing to the first wave of Covid-19.
Currently the number of flights operating daily has dropped drastically to just 6 flights per day due to the second wave of Covid-19 hitting the district.
Airport sources state, "Indigo Airlines was the only airline to offer more daily services at the Coimbatore International Airport. Keeping in mind the current situation, air services are being provided to cities like Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad. Air India offers service only for a few days, otherwise the main source of travel is just 'Indigo'.
'Spice Jet' and Go Air, which were already operating, have suspended their services. 'Air Arabia' operates as the only foreign airline shuttle between Coimbatore and Sharjah. Even after being declared as operational for 5 days of service, the company has cancelled flights on some days," elaborated the sources.
