Work is underway to install IOC gas pipes in Coimbatore by chopping palm trees along the roadsides. Locals in the area are protesting at the move.
Coimbatore: The IOC gas pipes are being laid at Madukkarai Nilambur Bypass Road. As a result, more than 50 palm trees along the road have been cut down.
Locals in the area protest saying, "There is a saying that the one who keeps the coconut tree will die after reaping its benefits and the one who keeps the palm tree will just watch it before they die. The palm trees that were planted many years ago are now the livelihood of the poor. It is worrying that the trees planted on the roadside across the rural areas of Coimbatore many years ago are now being removed for the installation of the gas pipes," they added.
The locals have requested the municipal administration and Corporation officials to immediately intervene against the felling of palm trees along the roadsides.
