1-year-old female elephant dies after falling off a cliff in Valparai: Valparai Forest Department
Coimbatore: Forest officers were on patrol when they encountered a bad stench at theAkkamalai Bill Medu area. They found that one of the baby elephants was found dead in a decomposing state.
The Valparai Anaimalai Tiger Reserve in Coimbatore district is home to a large number of elephants. Recently few elephant deaths have occured in this forest area.
A team led by Anaimalai Tiger Reserve Co-Director Arokiya Xavier, Valparai Division Forest officer Jayachandran, Forest officer Dr. Sukumar and volunteers Ganesh and forester Muniyandi Keerthi reached the spot and investigated.
It was revealed that the calf could have fallen from the mountain slope and died. They identified that it was a female elephant about 1 year old.
Following this, the body of the baby elephant was autopsied and left for wildlife to eat. The death of two elephants in three days in the Valparai area has caused grief among elephant enthusiasts
