Construction works have been expedited at the unified bus stand in Vellalore, Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: As a part of the Smart City project, a new unified bus stand at a total cost of Rs 168 crores is being built at 2 lakh sq ft land.
In this project, a bus terminal with a capacity to hold 300 busses is being constructed. The terminal will have special space for express busses, town busses and other garage spaces for bus maintenance.
Also, battery-based busses are to be used as an alternative for diesel-based busses. Accordingly, special battery charging points and a separate service station has been allocated for its maintenance. Apart from this, the main building for Tirupur and Coimbatore Transportation Department will be constructed here in Vellalore with other services like passenger waiting area, information desk and 50 shops.

With the unified bus stand under construction in Vellalore, officials say that the entrance will have a 15 meters Lotus shaped centrepiece that resembles a bit like Sydney Opera House in Australia.
The entrance premises is estimated to be at a height of 170 meters and the works are scheduled to be completed within 3 months.
Officials also said that the bus terminal is built using ALCO panels which will help withstand rain, heat and all types of weathers. With 50% of the Busstand work has been completed so far, the remaining work will be completed in a few months.
"Vellalore Busstand will also get recognition like the Koyembedu Busstand," said an official.

This unified bus stand is said to facilitate local bus services, Mofussil bus services and Omnibus services. This will put an end to the time lost for people travelling to other districts switching between the other bus stands in Coimbatore.
