60 members from the Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam were arrested for protesting with black flags condemning Modi's move at the UN Assembly in support of Sri Lanka.
Coimbatore: The members of Thanthai Periyar Dravida Kazhagam were arrested today for protesting with black flags in Coimbatore. 60 members were detained at the scene. The protest was conducted to condemn Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to abstain from voting against Sri Lanka at the UN Assembly last week.
The UN Human Rights Council has passed a resolution calling for war crimes action against Sri Lanka under Mahinda Rajapaksa, who committed genocide against Tamil Eelam. The resolution was supported by 22 countries, including Britain and Germany. But without supporting the resolution, Modi has tactfully walked out in favour of Rajapaksa.
Modi is now accused of betraying the Tamils by supporting Sri Lanka. The public also states that the lakhs of Tamils killed in Sri Lanka were Hindus and that Modi did not speak for the Hindus and for the Ganesha temple that was bombed.
Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam General Secretary Ramakrishnan condemned the act of BJP and claimed that Modi betrayed the Tamils without supporting the decision of the Christian countries.
Today, the members of Thanthai Periyar Dravidar League members in Coimbatore staged a black flag protest in Peelamedu to criticise Modi, who will be visiting Dharapuram for a campaign.
They carried banners and chanted slogans and called out Modi the enemy of Tamils. They also accused him of killing Islamists in Gujarat, and for not supporting the resolution against Sri Lanka in the UN Human Rights Council.
Soon after the protest was staged, there was a tussle between the police and the protesters.
The police have arrested 60 members, including 10 women, who were involved in a road blockade.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is attending a public meeting today in Dharapuram to seek support for BJP State President L Murugan, who is contesting from Dharapuram constituency at 2021 elections.
