Election Commission orders Health Department to make arrangements for Coronavirus patients to vote in upcoming elections

Coimbatore: With a spike in the rise of Coronavirus infections in Tamil Nadu including Coimbatore, the Election Commission has directed the Health Department to make adequate arrangements for COVID-19 patients in public and private hospitals, as well as COVID-19 patients who are under isolation at home to vote through postal ballot.

Even as the Election Commission (EC) has issued the directive to the Health Department, the EC itself has made provision for those who have been treated for the Coronavirus infection to vote in person by going in PPE. Since infection could possibly spread, these voters are given the last one hour of voting to cast their votes when all staff at the polling booths will be wearing protective suits on duty.

Patients with the Coronavirus infection who are being treated at the Coimbatore ESI Hospital need to also be given the provision of voting and hence the EC has ordered the Health Department to implement a plan to find out the constituencies they should be voting in and transport them in an ambulance to those areas to vote.
