Kamal was given a new name 'Dupatta Kamal' for calling Vanathi Srinivasan a 'Tukada' politician.
Coimbatore: Union Minister Smriti Irani campaigned in Coimbatore to support BJP Coimbatore South candidate Vanathi Srinivasan on March 27.
During the campaign, Smriti Irani challenged Kamal Haasan to participate in a direct debate against Vanathi Srinivasan. Following this, Makkal Needhi Maiam issued a press release saying that our leader does not need to discuss with the 'Tukada' politician.
Further, MNM leader and Coimbatore South candidate Kamal Haasan replied to the challenge by saying that he is ready to debate with the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers. Kamal Haasan also said that his party's students wing is enough to debate against Vanathi Srinivasan and asked Smriti Irani to organize the meeting.
In retaliation, more than 25 women members, led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state women's team leader and actress Jayalakshmi, chanted slogans condemning Kamal Haasan near a car parking area on Thomas Road, Coimbatore.
The protestors had pictures of Kamal Haasan acting closely with the actresses in the film. Subsequently, the members also called him 'Dupatta Kamal' and chanted slogans for calling Vanathi Srinivasan 'Tukada'.
The protest was also attended by BJP district head Jayathilaka, State Executive Committee members Geetha Vasant, Maithili Vino, Ex Councillor Deepa and Lalita Mohan.
