Three men who pretended to be police stole a diamond ring from a jewellery workshop.
Coimbatore: The police have arrested three people for pretending to be police and allegedly stealing a diamond ring worth Rs 2 lakh from the owner of a gold jewellery workshop.
Balasanmugam (42), runs a travel agency and a gold jewellery workshop in Venkatkrishnan Road, RS Puram, Coimbatore. He owned a diamond ring worth Rs. 2 lakh in his workshop. Since Balasanmugam is facing a cash crunch, he contacted his friend Balamurugan to help him sell the diamond ring on his behalf.
Regarding the diamond ring, Balamurugan has spoken with his friends. Meanwhile, Arumugam (42), a resident of Kavundampalayam RS Nagar, contacted Balamurugan and said he is interested to purchase the ring. He also requested Balamurugan to bring the ring along to the second street in Gandhipuram on the afternoon of March 18.
Relying on his words, Balamurugan reached the place with the diamond ring. As he was waiting, he met with Arumugam while 3 people dressed as policemen approached them. They threatened Balamurugan and did an enquiry about the diamond ring. The men also asked if the ring was smuggled and asked Balamurugan to surrender the ring to them.
Balamurugan refused to hand it over and said that it is his friend's ring. Soon after, the three men snatched it from him and escaped in a motorcycle.
Following this incident, Balamurugan lodged a complaint with the Kattoor police. The police investigated Arumugam, who said that he had planned to steal the diamond ring with his accomplice Jacob (48) from Ganapathy, Suresh (42) from Pattukottai, Thanjavur district and Karthik (35) from Udayarpalayam. Three including Arumugam and his accomplices Jacob and Suresh were arrested and the diamond ring was returned to Balamurugan. The police are on the lookout for Karthik, who has fled the area.
