Similar fire incidents have previously happened on the 4th and 15th March at the depot.
Coimbatore: The garbage collected from 100 wards across the areas under Coimbatore Corporation is dumped at Vellalore Garbage Depot.
Tonnes of waste is dumped in this area every day and the work for segregating this garbage is going on. Due to frequent incidents of fire breakouts at this landfill, a fire truck is permanently parked for assistance.
Today, a sudden fire broke out in a part of the garbage depot. The fire was initially put out by the stationed fire truck. But, the flames spread across the depot without control so an additional fire truck was called from the South fire station.
Apart from this, four water trucks have been called in for help and are battling in full force to put out the fire. The area currently filled with smoke caused by the fire.
This is the third time in the same month that a fire has broken out at the landfill. Similar fire accidents happened on the 4th and 15th of March, 2021.
