Coimbatore: On Saturday, fresh COVID-19 cases in Tamilnadu inched past the 2,000 mark as 2,089 persons tested positive for the deadly virus. The number of fresh cases in Coimbatore is continuously on the rise and has exceeded 100 after a few months, while Chennai’s daily case is surging alternatively.
As of Saturday, March 27, Coimbatore has recorded 185 new cases, which is the highest in recent times, says Dr Nirmala, Dean of Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital.
"There are as many as 76 COVID-19 positive cases in CMCH, in which a few of them have been discharged, said Dr Nirmala. However, she did not provide the exact number of the patients that were discharged today.
The fresh Covid-19 cases have been increasing in the last few days in the state and Coimbatore. The last record of more than 100 positive cases per day was in December.
Now, with the state assembly elections round the corner and people gathering without following any protocols, it is speculated that this could be the reason for the spike in daily cases.

Around 9 people are said to have lost their lives due to Covid-19 today in the state, making the total number of the death toll at 12,569.
