Villagers from Tamil Nadu - Kerala border block candidates who come asking for votes; cites lack of basic amenities as reason
Coimbatore: The villagers from Vadakuparaimedu area situated in the Tamil Nadu - Kerala border, has put up a notice board that stated that candidates are not allowed to come inside asking for votes as their village has been deprived of basic amenities like roads, cemetery etc.,
Vadakuparaimedu village is a small area located on the Tamil Nadu- Kerala border next to Pollachi. This village with more than 100 families comes under the Divansaputhur panchayat, which is affiliated with Valparai assembly constituency.
The Vadakkuparaimedu villagers have been demanding roads for many years. It is because they have to cross the Kerala border to reach the village. Also, there is only one primary school in the village and they have to walk two kilometres to study Tamil at a high school in Kerala.
Apart from this, there are no proper toilet facilities in the village. Due to the lack of them, all the women and children in the area complain that they use the open space to defecate. Also, there is no cemetery in this village and if they have to access it, they are forced to use the cemetery situated in Kerala.
The villagers have been suffering because of the frequent bandh in Kerala. Since they rely on Kerala for everything from children's education to cemetery needs, the villagers are not able to commute without proper roads.
Therefore, the villagers of the Vadakuparaimedu area have placed a notice board on the border of the village and expressed their dissent. They insisted that no politician should come in to ask for votes since they have not fulfilled any demands for so many years.
The villagers also complained that the Election officials who spotted the boards and posters have removed them and warned the people of the area.
