Tense situation prevails in Ooty as BJP members stage roadside protest

Ekathuva Jamath Party leader, Velur Ibrahim visited the Kandal area, near Ooty in Nilgiris today, to campaign for BJP candidate Bhojarajan.

The Nilgiris: Over a hundred BJP party members staged a protest in Ooty after police officials denied permission for Velur Ibrahim to enter the Kandal area which houses a large population of minority communities.

Ekathuva Jamath Party's leader Velur Ibrahim today visited the Kandal area near Ooty in Nilgiris to campaign for BJP candidate Bhojarajan. Police officials who received information that certain minority groups were plotting trouble during Velur Ibrahim's visit, stopped his car and the cars of other BJP party members near Rohini junction.

On account of this, BJP party members under Velur Ibrahim staged a roadside demonstration at the Rohini junction which resulted in heavy traffic congestion on the Ooty-Gudalur road for more than an hour. Since a lot of police officials were stationed at the venue, there was tension in the area. Later DSP Mohan Nawas and town DSP Maheshwaran held talks with the BJP members after which the BJP party members left the Kandal area to gather support in the Thalaikundha area.

Addressing the media later, Velur Ibrahim said, "I am involved in campaigning for the NDA alliance across Tamil Nadu. As part of that tour, I came to Ooty today. The Islamic community here have extended their support to BJP and hence I went to the Kandal area to garner their support. But police officials denied permission to enter the area saying they were protecting me from being attacked. An indirect plan is being executed to suppress BJP's win in the assembly elections. But, it is my duty to take the Muslim welfare schemes done by the State and Central Governments to the Islamic community people in Tamil Nadu. I will also strive hard to make the NDA alliance win in Tamil Nadu. The Election Commission must intervene regarding this issue and help me fulfill my national responsibility," he added.
